Every result starts from the resting energy requirement (70 x kg^0.75, Merck Veterinary Manual) and the 2006 National Research Council maintenance equations that the WSAVA feeding charts are built on: 95-130 kcal x kg^0.75 for adult dogs, 100 x kg^0.67 or 130 x kg^0.4 for adult cats, a growth equation for puppies and per-kilogram bands for kittens. Weight loss follows the 2021 AAHA guidelines (at or below RER for the target weight).
Grams, cups and pouches come from the calorie statement printed on your own food, so the calculators work for any brand and for both US (kcal per cup) and EU (kcal per 100 g) labels. Individual animals need up to 30% more or less than any formula: the result is a starting point to adjust with your vet, not a prescription.
